Notes; We are indebted to Steven Wachter who diligently created the text file of Wesley Noah Wachter's type-written genealogy document. Steven's effort was, I am sure, difficult because he was working from a "four or fifth generation" copy of the difficult to read original document. We do not know where the original document is, but copies of the document are available at the Frederick, Maryland Historical Society.

There are several omissions and errors in W. N. Wachter's genealogy account. But given the year he produced the document, during which there were few genealogy records, and the ability to travel to search for supporting records was limited, he did a remarkable job. We are grateful for his efforts, and we are sure he would be pleased to know that his work is a valuable reference and that his interest in genealogy has come though the ages to his present relatives.

Other genealogy narratives in this genealogy record will point out the errors and omissions; we hope that we do not introduce any additional errors into this shared genealogy record.

Genealogy of the Wachter Clan

There has been quite a number of names of Wachter come to America. I will give the names of them that I have found. Michael Wachter; George and Jacob Wachter, landed in America Sept. 25, 1749. Gabriel Wachter, Sept. 25, 1751; Conrad Wachter, Oct. 6, 1767; George Wachter, Nov. 10, 1767; Hans George Wachter, Oct. 23, 1752; Christopher Wachter, Nov. 19, 1753 and Augustus E. Wachter 1855.

I have found others who spell their names different as Waechter, Waghter, Wacker, Wuchter, and Ein Wachter.

The name Wachter in the German means A Sentinel or a Watchman.

Of the Wachter, Reese and Easterday Families I have complied during the years 1907, 1908 and 1909.

A suggestion was made by Lewis F. Wachter at Frederick, Md. in Sept. 1905 that a record of the Wachter family would be a desirable thing to have. I then gathered the names of some of the heads of families and began to arrange for the genealogy.

On Sept. 2, 1907 at Frederick, Md. I began together records and to compile a genealogy of the Wachter family, Wilerick Reese, Easterday, Blessing and the Schindler Families of Frederick, Co. Md.

The difficulties encountered in such a task can only be realized to those who have made a like effort. I have examined many works of history and County records, searched through at least fifty thousand names carefully for traces of these families, records of cemeteries visited, records gathered wherever possible and aid received from many relatives and fiends, for all of which I am truly grateful.

Having spent many months and wakeful nights in an endeavor to

get, compile and arrange in families as fully complete and truthful a record of the original family heads as possible, namely of Michael, Samuel, Jacob and Phillip Wachter, sons of George Wachter of Wurtemberg, Germany, George Wachter and Jacob Wachter, brothers, and as I believe Michael Wachter their father, came from Wurtemberg, Germany in the vessel "Speedwell" commanded by Captain James Creagh, they landed in America at Philadelphia, Penn., Sept. 25, 1749.

All trace of Jacob Wachter and his father are unknown to me, as all efforts to trace them have failed thus far.

George Wachter remained in the vicinity of Philadelphia, Pa., for some years, records show that he was in Upper Hanover Township Phil., Pa., in 1769 and in York, Co., Pa., in 1772, and in Cumberland Co., Pa., in 1777 to 1782, after this we find him located in Frederick Co. Md. in 1783.

George Wachter had nine children; names and dates of births will be found on pages 12-16 of this book. Four of his children - Michael, Samuel, Jacob and Phillip can definitely accounted for whose family records are given in this book. Errors doubtless will be found in names and dates, because of different records given, as well as omissions caused from lack of information urgently sought but not obtained.

The Wachter family were of German decent, of all the different families of that name in the country.

Religiously, nearly all were and are members of some branch of the Christian Church, mostly Lutherans, some Methodist, some Reformed and other churches.

The Wachters have always been recognized as quiet, industrious, morally and upright citizens, none were known to have been violators of the civil laws.

In occupation they were mostly successful farmers, three were ministers of the gospel, a number were merchants, some school teachers, some were mechanics, carpenters and builders, very few ever held any civil office or known as politicians.

Hopeing that what has been gathered may be useful and appreciated by the present and future generations. I submit this work in love and respect for the Wachter name.

To the above has been added the family of my Mother viz, the Reese family, Johan Jost Reese came from the Palitinatenate Germany, in the vessel "Two Brothers" Thomas Arnott Captain. He landed in America at Phil., Pa., Oct. 13, 1747.

His son John Adam Reese located in Frederick, Co., Md. in 1770, 1775 near Bethel Lutheran Church, about five miles north of Frederick, Md. See record on another page of this book.

Also a record of my wife's family viz the Easterday family, Christian Easterday and his father and brother came to America from Wurtemberg, Germany and landed at Phil., Pa., Sept. 13, 1749, on the vessel "Christian" Thomas Brady, Captain. Record on another page of this book.

The record found was in German language. I was permitted to have it translated by a relative friend.

The first name on the record was Veronica Wachter, born Dec. 23, 1751 in Upper Hanover Township, Phil., Pa. The parents were Michael and Marie Maurer Wachter, Baptized Sept. 14, 1781, by Rev. Lenard Wise a Reformed minister. Witnesses, Phillip Reed and Veronica his wife.

Veronica Wachter died Dec. 14, 1818. Note: Michael Wachter was the father of George Wachter, Jacob Wachter and of Veronica.

George Wachter came to America, Sept. 25, 1749, arriving at Phil. Pa.

George had nine children as follows (see also page 17 of this book):

(1) Michael Wachter, born - Oct. 7, 1769, between 9 and 10 o'clock pm. in Upper Hanover Township, Phil., Pa. Baptized by Reverend Neimyer, Lutheran pastor, Wit., Phillip Kimber and his wife and Michael Reed and his wife.

Michael Wachter died Nov. 9, 1844 in Frederick, Md. age 75 years, 1 month and 2 days. Buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Frederick, Md. Note; Upper Hanover Township is now in Montgomery County Pa.

(2) Mary Christina Wachter was born Jan. 6, 1772, between 2 and 3 o'clock pm, in German Township. Lork [Note; typographical error by W. N. W, should be York Co., Pa.[sdw]] Co., Pa. Baptized by Rev. Wilbaum, Lutheran Pastor. Wit. George Steiner and Annie Marie his wife. She died Feb. 7, 1791 at age of 19 yrs, 4 mons and 3 days. Note; German Township is now in Adams Co., Pa.

(3) Catherine Wachter was born, Mar. 27, 1775, at 4 o'clock am, in German Township, York Co., Pa., Baptized by re. Wilbaum Lutheran Pastor. Died Oct. 23. 1829, at the age of 54 yrs 4 mos and 28 days. Note; Catherine was probable married to a Dr [? or Mr.[sdw] Staley, but I have no positive proof of this. Note: German Township is now in Adams Co. Pa.

(4) George Wachter, was born Oct. 4, 1777 at 10 o'clock pm in Menallen Township, Adams Co., Pa. Baptized by Rev. [?]ei[??]r of the Reformed Church. Wit. George [?]arts and Catherine his wife. I have not been able to get any further trace of information of this George Wachter.

(5) Samuel Wachter was born Mar. 23, 1780, at 2 pm. in what is now Washington Township, York, Co., Pa., Baptized by Rev. John George Krug, Lutheran Pastor. Wit. [????]l Heafner and Margarete his wife.

(6) Jacob Wachter, born Dec. 27, 1782, at 5 pm, in what is now Washington Township, York, Co., Pa. Baptized by Rev. George John Krug, Lutheran Pastor. Wit. Jacob Trout and his wife. Note; This was my Grandfather (W.N.Wachter)

(7) Elizabeth Wachter, born Oct. 5, 1784 at 9 pm., in Frederick Co., Md. Baptized by Rev. John George Krug, Luth. Pastor. Wit. Elisabeth Heffner, Died 4 weeks of age. Buried by Rev. Krug.

He was married to Marie Margarete Wiest, Dec. 12, 1820. She was born, Aug 28, 1800 and died Aug 23, 1856 at the age of 56 yrs. They had 5 children as follows:
